::Shian and McCoy approached the doors to the quarters. She actually felt better, a little lighter, a little more free.::
Thank you, Dr. McCoy. I am sorry that I'm relying so much on you for this. But I know that Brock has his responsibilities. Though I also know that he's always here for me.
::She sighed, looking at the interior of the room as the doors opened for them.::
I still have a lot to get through. But I'm starting to think that I can see the light at the other end.
::She looked over at the Doctor again.::
You don't have to stay with me until Brock gets back. I mean, you can, you're welcome to, but if you have other things to do...
::She didn't know how to say it without it sounding awkward.::
Would you like to come in and sit with me until Brock gets back?

It's no bother at all. No medical emergencies on board to speak of. Just a lot of pregnancies all of a sudden.
That was pretty much unheard of in my day. You got pregnant, you took a ground assignment, period.
But I see no reason why an officer can;t be a family man, too.
Long distance marriages can be rough. believe me, I know.
Well if you don't mind a doddering, cantankerous old country Doctor, I'll be happy to stay until the Captain returns.

Of course you're welcome to stay, Dr. McCoy. You've been such a huge help to me already, and I enjoy your company.
::She entered the quarters with him following. Heading right for the replicator.::
A large glass of kava juice, 3.2 °C, please.
::She turned to McCoy.::
Would you like something to drink, Doctor?
::She picked up her juice from where it appeared and waited to hear what McCoy would like before moving to go sit down.::

Well, actually, I'm able to taste. I haven't done much of it. didn't see where it would me much good, But come to think of it, I'll have a mint Julep.
::He thought for a moment about further therapy.::
You I just had a thought. Maybe Me, you and The Captain could spend a little time on of my favorite programs. A nice camping trip in the Colorado Rocky mountains back on Earth.
It's very relaxing, even if it is simulated nature, and it would give me an opportunity to whip up a batch of the best d**n bakes beans you'll ever have. Old family recipe. Goes way back to the old South.
Just remember not to sit too close to the campfire and you'll be fine.

::She repeated his order to the replicator, though she had no idea what a mint julep was. It appeared a few seconds later and she carried it over to the Doctor, then sat down.::
Camping? I haven't been camping since I was about 5 or 6 years old. Don't know how I'd do at it, now.
::She took a sip from her glass, then looked at him curiously upon his last statement.::
Does something other than getting burned happen when you sit too close to the fire? I mean, I know it's been a while, but I don't remember camp fires doing anything else.
::The thought of spending some time with Brock in a holodeck program, when he wouldn't have to be expected to report to the bridge every ten minutes would be nice. Maybe he could convince Commander Rivers to cover him for a day.::

Not since you were 5 or 6? Well then it's hight time you tried it again. Camping gear is pretty easy to use these days. I'm sure the Captain know how to build a fire, after all he was trained to survive on the surface of Ardana.
As far as the last reference, I just thought you might have done a little camping at the academy. Young officers often get crazy. I'm not going to explain the reference to a lady, but suffice it to say there is one small side effect of beans. that's all I'm saying on the matter. ::Laughs::

::She looked down at her drink, then back up to the doctor.::
My father took all of us on a camping excursion. Jax was 12, I think. I just remember it as one of the only times we ever had any kind of family vacation.
Didn't do any camping during Academy years. Though I did hear stories from some of the other cadets. I don't recall any of them being about beans, though.
::She nearly smiled.::
I only spent my last two years of Academy training on Earth, with a good bit of my time spent in the Academy Flight Range. The first two years were at the annex on Sigma Ceti.
::She reflected for a moment on that, then added, turning to the doctor.::
Did you know I completed the Command School Courses?
::She half-smiled now.::
I don't talk much about it, though. Back when I was on Concord, I thought my career would be taking off again. Concord was only my second ship. The USS Paladin was my first. Got promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade there.
Then I was back closer to home after my mother fell ill, taking care of her and my father. I was stationed on Deep Space Nine, at that time. Six months later, I was on Concord, and met Brock.
And look at me now.
::She shook her head. She was realizing just how far she hadn't come in the past few years. It wasn't her lack of promotion that bothered her, it was her lack of service.::
::She sighed and looked back at McCoy.::
So, when's the last time you went camping?

Sounds like you've have one hell of a career already. I bet you'd make a fine captain someday.
You've got more experience than many of the officers on this ship. Lost a lot of good people in that war. The fact that you're back means that's one more person with experience to pass along.
::He thought for a moment...::
Last time I went camping?
Gosh, it must have been at least a hundred years ago, or d**n close to it.
Just me and my two closest companions, one of which had to contemplate the meaning of the lyrics to 'Row, row, row, your boat'
It was a t Yosemite national park. th real thing. It's nice to get away from technology for a while. Good for the soul.

Well, then, maybe camping would be a good idea. I haven't been in nearly 20 years and it's been almost 100 for you. I wonder if Brock has ever been camping.
I'm not sure I'd make as good a captain. But maybe someday. I've got a long ways to go yet.
::She drank some more of her juice, set the glass down, and curled up in the chair.::
Is your drink alright, Doctor? Or are you just not into social drinking?

You'd make a fine Captain someday, if that's what you wanted. I know one officer whom I served with for many years who remained a chief flight officer until he made Commander. He got his own ship relatively late, but he did it when he was ready.
Not everyone can go on the same schedule in life.
::He Hesitated:: What? Oh, no the drinks' fine. It tastes like the real thing, but it's just not the same.
I used to heve these sitting out in a field in Georgia. you could mell the honeysuckle. My Mom used to make cider the old fashioned way.
Without all that , well,......It kind of loses something.

::She nodded.::
I agree with you on the replicated versus fresh. And you know that's something that Brock prides himself on for Polaris.
::She thought about it, then added.::
I suppose that if I knew what a mint julep was, I could have tried to make it fresh.
::She reached over and picked her glass of kava juice up , drinking from it.::
My mother used to make kava juice fresh from the fruit she'd pick up at the trade market. She added something to it, though, to make it special. I never knew what that was. But she made it the best in the galaxy.
::She smiled to herself, thinking about it.::

::Brock went to quarters right after he finished his meeting with Commandr Rivers. He was lloking for to a few hours of down time and spending it with Shian.::
Hello, everyone.
::He came in as the doors slid behind him::
How's everything been going?

::Her eyes lit up at the sight of her husband, though her expression was kept to a mere pleasant smile.::
::She stood up and walked to him, wrapping her arms around him and holding on to him like she hadn't seen him in days.::
::She kept her eyes closed and just enjoyed the feeling of him being close to her.::
I am so glad to see you ::She whispered in his ear.::

::Having his wife happy to see him as she was was the best Feeling brod had had in a lng time. Her touch, and her smell were very calming to him.::
And I've missed you terribly. And I intend for us to get caught up on every hug we missed while we were apart. Maybe some other things, too.
::Winks::
So what would you like to do? Commander Rivers has the ship for a few hours. We have a distinguished guest coming aboard.
Seems the Commander knows him. I think she'll manage to entertain her for a while.
::He hugged her again and kissed her cheek.::

::She pulled back from him.::
You took some time off? ::She searched in his eyes.::
It wasn't just because of me, was it? I don't want you to feel like you need to just spend time with me. I understand that you have a ship to run, and it's ok that you're on the bridge doing just that.
::Shian wondered to whom he was referring when he mentioned the distinguished guest.::
Aren't the other ones, the Volanthi and the ones they were fighting with, aren't they still on board?
::She looked over at Dr. McCoy.::
We did some therapy today. And I got some frustrations out.
So, as for what I'd like to do, I don't know. But doctor's orders are to relax and have some fun.
What did you have in mind?
::She wanted to talk with him about her time in the holodeck, about her grief over her father, but after all she'd been through just now, she felt it might be better just to follow the doctor's orders. She would make the time later to talk with him. If she were to get through this and return to being herself, she needed him to be with her through all of it.::

::He smiled::
You'll have to tell me all about this therapy. Doctor McCoy I can;t tell you how much I appreciate everything you've done for us.
::Looking back at his wife.::
Right now, all our guests are going back to their respective ships. I've managed to get the Volanthi fleet to stand down.
Anyway, we have a few hours. How about that date in the arboretum? We'll just relax and unwind a little. I'm sure we both could use it.

::She nodded.::
Alright. The arboretum is fine. I know you've been wanting to show it to me.
::She gave an appreciative near-smile to the doctor.::
Dr. McCoy, I...
::She couldn't find the words to tell him how much his time with her already has meant. And that she hoped they'd get to spend more time together. The idea of him being a father figure to her was a pleasant one for her, even if he was helping with her psychological treatment.::
...I hope we can have another session as good as today's. Thank you for everything you've done so far.
::She turned back to Brock.::
You made peace between two races, and I made some progress in my issues. Maybe that does deserve a little time to relax.

No need to thank me. It's what I do. I'm just glad to know I'm helping.
Now you kids go how have a good time. I'll be in sickbay. I'm sure someone needs a prenatal exam.

I'm glad the Doctor is helping you. it's wonderful to hear you say you had a good session. you've come a long way in a relatively short space of time.
::He held her again::
I can't wait to show you the Arboretum. I thought of you the entire time while designing it.

::Shian was sure she blushed a little.::
Well, I don't know about how much progress I've made, but I've taken some solid steps, at least.
Dr. McCoy will have a good report to send back to Starbase 173 this time. Maybe in a few more weeks, I'll be almost back to normal.
::She was being hopeful, here, but her gains in the sessions she'd had with the doctor were enough for her to have a little bit of hope.::
::And it was clear that her husband was instrumental in helping a good deal with her courage. She could almost feel it every time she was near him.::
If you thought of me when you were designing the arboretum, then I am very curious to see it.
::She smiled.::
Do you want to change your uniform before we go? Maybe something a little more casual?
::She thought it might be a decent idea if his outfit was more relaxed, since he was taking a break, himself.::
::She was beginning to realize just what it was about Brock that made her feel stronger. It was the fact that he seemed to need her. Not outwardly, of course. But it seemed as if he needed her to help him almost as much as she needed him.
