::She turned to see the children with the banner and hear them say it. She still had a broad smile.::
Thank you, all of you.
::When he asked her about an encore, she chuckled a little.::
Of course you can have an encore. I love when you sing and play for me.
::She kissed him lightly. Then she gathered the children with her and sat down with them to hear his next song.::
::She was still in shock and awe that he'd done this for her. Then hearing that he'd been putting it together since before she'd been found was more than she ever expected.::
::She glanced around at the faces of the kids, noting their enthusiasm in the music.::

::How wonderful it was for him to see his wife gathering with the children. She was so comfortable and natural around them, ti seemed.
Rosie sat next to her and held her arm, smiling. How wonderful it was, allowing children on a Starship, Fo it was thier innocent, naive, pure love, that right now took Shian's fears and pushed them aside.
As the children sat about her, touching her, it was their power That filled her. The haggard look of guilt ad hurt were lifted from her, as if the children were carrying her burden together. To make her feel lighter.::
He took his guitar back up and called the selection to the computer. The music started.:

::As they sat waiting for Brock to start, Shian felt the hands of one of the children on her arm. She looked down to see the girl that had helped Brock set up for the first one. She smiled down to her and patted the girl's hand with her own.::
::The kids seemed to huddle close to her. And as she looked back up towards her husband, she noticed how different she felt. While sitting amidst the children, she felt like she was there to guard and protect them, though she knew there was no immediate need to do so. And she noticed how much they warmed to her, though they really didn't know her.::
::She supposed her husband must have talked to them about her, maybe told them stories. In a way, he was working them into his family. Most captains didn't have time to spend with the children on their ships. But Brock had made time. And they seemed to love him for that.::
::Her husband was such a special person. She loved him and she was more than glad that he loved her.::
::They listened to him sing, and Shian kept smiling . The words were beautiful, the meaning clear. They all applauded him when he was finished.::
Another beautiful performance.
::She looked over at Rosie, who was clapping with a beaming smile on her face. She obviously loved it when Brock came here to sing with them.::

::Brock finished the song as Rosie stood by to take the guitar form him. he stood to adress the children.::
You've all done wonderful today. More than you realize. So, I'm going to give all of you a special civlian commendation. I'll have the medals replicated and then we'll have a ceremony later on.
Now, I know that you all have work to finish up today. ::He turned to see the teacher's aide standing off to the side where she had been listening.::
But the Captain has much more homework that all of you, I can assure you. Right now, Mrs Dantara and I are going to finsih our picnic, so I can get back to the bridge.
::Rosie stepped forward::
"attention" she snapped.
::The children quickly lined up as Rosie saluted Brock.::
"Fall out" She sapped again, as they all began to follow the teacher's aide, single file.

Sara walks up to Shian and Brock. ''Those were beautiful songs you sang to the children and your wife Captain Dantara. Someday my son will be in here with the kids someday. I hope your still around to sing then also. Prehaps someday I should come down here and sing for the kids. Anyway I will see you later Captain and Shian its nice seeing you back and smiling again. You got yourself a good man." :she would wipe the tear from her face. ''You two connect in a special way I know you two are soul mates. You two complete one another.''

::Shian watched them all file out of arboretum, seeing now that Rosie was obviously their second in command. She found herself being proud of them all.::
::Once they were gone and the doors slid shut again, she turned to Brock.::
That was so sweet of you. Those children are very fond of you. They look up to you. It makes me happy to know that you spend time with them. Most captains barely know the children on their ships.
::As she and Brock walked back to sit down on the bench by the basket, they were approached by the Chief of Security, who addressed them.::
::Shian nodded and smiled, not really sure what else to say to the young woman, but noted that she seemed to be expecting, by what she had said.::
Thank you. I appreciate the welcome.
::And she happened to agree with the woman. She had a good man. And their special bond was the thing that probably kept her striving.::

Thank you, Sara, ::Brock said as they sat.::
You're more than woelcome to come sing with the children whenever you like. Just let the Teacher know. They love to learn new songs.
::As Sara left, He turned his attention back to Shian.::
The Children are a big respnsibility here on the ship. the Teachers are well trained to deal with any emergencies.
You see how Rosie leads them, and thy follow? At this young age, even now, she is displaying leadrship characteristics. and she leads effectively wit a vey "soft" command style. She doesn't act like: "I'm the boss".
She watches everything I do. And what I do may well detrmine their own futures. Rosie is born to lead. She once asked me "Captain Brock do think I'll ever command a ship like this?"
I said to her, 'No, Rosie........I think the ship you command will be much better than this one.'
::He smiled.:: You know what? The children don't care what races the others are form. To them they're all just children and want to play. Whether your skin is like ours, or green like Mel's....They don't care.
The truth is, Shian, Children are closer to nature and still have the ability to show their true selves.
It's they who are really the teachers. How wonderful this universe would be if we could all just be children again. Maybe after a few more centuries of bloodshed, we'll begin to learn what they have been trying to teach us all along.
::He took a bite of cheese and drank some wine.::
It was nice, how they took to you, and you to them.

::Shian took the glass that Brock was drinking from and took a sip. She gave him a coy smile when he gave her the slightly startled look before it faded into a smile of his own.::
::She picked up a couple pieces of fruit and ate them as he talked about the children.::
She will have a ship that is better. She has so many years between now and when she'd be eligible to be a captain. They'll make great strides in new technology and new ship construction by then.
::She nodded.::
They are the future of the Federation. And I hope that they don't lose too much of that free thinking and natural vision when they get to be in our positions.
::She smiled to him.::
I have never really been around a lot of children. But I loved it. I'm glad they like me. I didn't even have to think about how to behave around them, it was just sort of natural, I guess.
::She ate another piece of fruit, then took another sip of the wine from Brock's glass before handing it back to him.::
This was so great, Brock. I've enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you for all that you've done.
So, how long until you need to be back on the bridge?
::She picked out a piece of cheese, paired it with a piece of kava and ate them together. She really was having about the best time she could ever think of having right now. But being here with him, with the arboretum, with the children, it was effortless.::

::He listend to his wife as they ate. He found that this was most relaxing time he'd had in very long while. He needed it. He needed to be able to slow down for a bit.
He had worked frenetically on getting command of Polaris, once the ship was recovered. He and Amir had gone over her engines with a fine tooth comb.
Now hwe coul finally sit back a moment and enjoy the fruit of his labor. Just relaxing with Shian, hearing her voice, and seeing her with the children, and smiling, he found himself able to dump a good deal of the worries, the flotsam and jetsam, all the minutiae that goes through the mind of a Ship's Captain.::
I can only imagine the fantastic ships that will be around when Rosie comes of age. But we have a fantastic ship here. These old girls will be in service for a long time to come, just like the Miranda's were. The Nebula class is one of the best workhorses in the alpha quadrant.
I enjoy singing with the children. The fact that I am influence on them means that I touch the future. What Rosie and the others learn from us may one day be a tremendous asset to Starfleet. It's our job to make sure the next generation is better than we are.
::He stopped himself from talking "Shop"::
You're going to make a wonderful Mother someday, you know that? You're a natural. I think it would do you good to spend more time with them. You do;t have to sing, you can read them stories, or tell them about your experiences and what it's like being a pilot, they love hearing about those things.
Even McCoy comes in and tells the children tales about his adventures on the old Enterprise. He's like a Grandpa to them.
::He tapped his commbadge.::
Dantara to Commander Rivers. If there is nothing pressing that requires my attention, I'm going to be an hour longer. Feel free to bring the Ambassador to the Arboretum if you wish. Dantara out.
::He smiled:: Rank has its priveledges.
Baby, ::Brock continued:: You don't have to thank me for all this. It was a great joy to do this for you. Seeing you smiling and happy was more than enough thanks for me.
All I want is for you to be happy.

I agree. ::She smiled again in response to what he said about the children.::
::She thought for a moment about spending more time with the children.::
I'd like that. I'm not sure what exactly I'd do, but I think I'd like to spend more time with them. I'll think more about it and maybe talk to Dr. McCoy about it.
::The thought thrilled her, but she was a bit leery of it. She wanted to make sure that things would be safe for her, that she wouldn't have any episodic emotional outbursts when she was around them.::
You think I'll make a good mother? I'm not so sure. I mean, I don't know how I'd be with one of my own.
But I know you'll be the best father. You've already shown that in the way you are with the children here.
::She took some more food, eating, glancing about, looking back at her husband while he sent his comm to his executive officer.::
We have an Ambassador on board? Are we escorting him or her to a conference or something?
::She looked down at her hands for a minute before looking back up into his eyes.::
Today made me happy. And I needed it. I needed everything that's happened. It's helping. You're helping.

::Brock nodded.::
I think Dr McCoy is a good place to start. Why not accompany him next time he does his "Story hour?"
I sometimes stop by to listen to the stories myself. many crewmambers do. he's a marvelous storyteller.
And don;t tell me you dom;t know if you'd make a good Mother. I saw how you were with them. Being a Mother i something that is usually "on the job training" You hit the ground running and you just do it.
::He fed her a piece of fruit with cheese.::
Maybe they're the key, Shian. The pure love and innocence of those children may be the very thing that helps wash the poison out of your soul. If what i just saw was any indication, I may be right.
The Ambassador is a Vulcan. he's here primarily to see Commander Rivers, and....I think he'll have a little run-in with the Dr. It's Ambassador Spock. Apparently he and the Commander are old friends.
Vulcans are not big on pomp and circumstance. If he needs to speak to me, He'll have no problem asking for me. I just wonder how he's going to react to the Dr.
Those two had been the best of friends, and they've been known to have some heated arguments back in their day.
I t might be good for them to talk and get some things out. With all that, I doubt the Ambassador will require an audience with me. I'll go and meet him later on to pay my respects, though.
But as for right now... ::He stroked her arm:: The needs of the one out weigh the needs of the Ambassador as far as I'm concerned.

::She nodded as he spoke. She liked the idea of joining the doctor here sometime.::
I might just do that.
::Shian ate what he fed her, listening to him tell her about the Ambassador.::
I'm sorry that I don't know your first officer very well. I suppose I should take more time to get to know some of the other crew some time.
Ambassador Spock. I learned about him in school, and then even more while in the Academy. He's what they would call a legend.
::She laughed when Brock mentioned the doctor.::
From what Dr. McCoy has said, he didn't sound like he was overly fond of Ambassador Spock. He keeps referring to him with some rather interesting adjectives.
::Her demure smile returned when he stroked her arm gently.::
Brock, you have no idea how wonderful it is to hear you say things like that again. I was so afraid for so long that you'd not want me back. Then I was afraid you wouldn't understand.
But you do, or at least you're putting on a good face of it.
::She leaned over and kissed him. It was sweet and slow. And it was given with every pure intention of her love. How could she have ever doubted him? How he'd feel, how he'd react.::

Commander Rivers is a very private person. She spent a good deal of time with Vulcans. She doesn't make a habit of socialization. She has in the past, though, but knowing her, she'll stay out of your way to avoid making you uncomfortable. She's pleasant enough, but you'll have to assert yourself with her. She won't come to you.
As far as the Dr and the Ambassador, yes he ranta about Spock, but if you read between the lines I think the Dr is really saying he misses Spock.
Both he and Spock were Kir's main advisors. They were closest to him. That gave captain Kirk a unique perspective. On one hand, he had is first officer, the voice of logic and reason, and with McCoy he had passion and humanity.
Kirk found a way to balance them and come to conclusions as a result of both their input.
When Capt. Kirk first got command of the Enterprise, he wanted his longime friend, Gary Mitchell to be his XO. Command said "No, you two are great officers, but you think too much alike." So Spock was promoted to XO after Pike and Number One left the ship.
::He shimmied up close to her and put his arm around her::
Sweetheart, of course I understand. I just had to be patient and let you tell me in your own time. Now that it's out in the open, the pressure you were feeling is gone. Now we can fight this thing together.
Baby, I was never angry at you. If anything I was angry that those bastards didn't take me instead. I carried that guilt for a long time. That wasn't your fault, Shian.
Now where were we? ::He leaned back to her, continuing the passionate kiss she had started.::
::He then stroked her cheek:: I was afraid you'd never kiss me like that again.

::She listened as he told her about his executive officer, then about the crew that the real Dr. McCoy was a part of.::
I will respect Commander Rivers' privacy, of course. I was merely pointing out that it would be nice if I got to know some of the crew that's closest to you. I mean, not all at once, but a little at a time. She is your second in command. She is your most trusted of the crew.
But, it's alright. Maybe she'll at least speak with me once in a while. I know it's not the norm for Vulcans to be very social.
You seem to know a lot about Dr. McCoy's former crew. I only know what I've learned from the history books, so to speak.
::She could see that he had a zeal, almost a reverance for that crew. It was visible whenever he spoke of them. She wondered what interest it held for him. But she smiled just the same. She loved that he shared it with her.::
::He was right. The pressure that she'd been feeling since she knew she was coming back to him. It was a relief, yet, she still harbored a lot of fear and torment over it. She was glad, though, that he would be by her side throught everything, even with running the ship. Somewhere inside, she always knew he'd be there for her.::
::She kissed him back, like trying to will her love and her gratitude to him through her lips. The kind of kiss that she'd only ever shared with him. The kind that she'd only ever want to share with him.::
::She smiled as the kiss broke.::
And I was afraid you'd never want to kiss me like that again.

I'm sure Christina would be happy to talk to you. She just isn't agressively social.
Also, she understands the situation and is repecting your privacy. She understands that you'll talk to her when you're ready.
As far as why I know so much of McCoy's old crew, well, you know that they're a part of my planet's history. As children we are taught what Captain Kirk did back in 2269.
McCoy himself designed the original filter masks to help the Troglytes. We Troglytes don't allow ourselves to forget who our true friends are.
I've also listened to McCoy's "Story hour" whenever I can. Not tomention the stories Scotty began telling me from the time I was a cadet.
Those men and women served together for 30 years. They were a family. They all depended on each other and came through in situations that weren't easy.
The way McCoy once put it, there was a "Magic" about that crew. As long as they were together, they could accomplish anything.
I guess that's always intrigued me. Ihope this crew can reach that level. It's not the ship, or how big it is, or how advanced, It's the spirit of humanity, and their hearts that got them all through those things.
What an exciting time that must have been. Not that we've been lacking in that, lately. ::Smiles::
You were afraid I'd never kiss you like that again? ::Laughs:: you should worry more about how to get me to stop!

::Shian ate more of the fruit and cheese as she listened to him.::
Well, it might be a while before I attempt to interact with her.
::She smiled, then,::
I've heard a few of Doctor McCoy's stories. He's very good at telling them.
::The spirit of humanity. Odd for him to use such an expression when he, himself wasn't a human. Yet, it still embodied the ideal that he was trying to convey.::
It would be good to see your crew become that cohesive unit you're looking for. It takes all of them to make the whole. And I think they probably know that by now.
::She smirked at his last comment. It actually felt quite nice to be enjoying her time this much.::
After all this time apart from you, I don't think I would mind.
::She leaned against him.::

Dr McCoy is indeed a wonderful storyteller. Back in earlier centuries on Earth, In the southern American states, where he comes from, Storytelling was considered a great skill. He was taught that as an old tradition.
::He said, nodding in agreement with his wife.::
I think the reason that crew worked the way it did can be summed up in one word. Love.
These men and women were a family. Not just a crew doing their jobs. There was an unspoken love between them all along.
::As she cuddled to him, he put his arm around her.::
It appears we have a bit of catching up to do.
::He smiled as he kissed her warmly, wanting the moment to never end.::

::She recalled her time on the Concord, being new to the crew and ship. Yet she had grown very comfortable with them in a short time. Of course, Brock may have had something to do with that at the time. She'd been drawn to him the moment she saw him.::
::She kissed him back, wrapping herself around the feelings she was experiencing. This time with him, here, was pushing everything else from her mind, almost as if those demons didn't exist.::
::She smiled to her husband.::
I know we do. And we'll get there. I just don't want to keep you from what you need to be doing.
::Shian didn't want to sound too "needy". Truth be told, she was nervous. She'd missed him so much, looked forward to this time for so long, believing at one point that she'd only be able to have this time ever again in her dreams.::
::On the other hand, she knew he did have to get back to the bridge soon. The ship still needed him right now.::

::He just held on to her tightly for those moments. Being in her arms was the place he most wanted to be. The warmth of hr arms was like the morning sunlight on a Stratos terrace.::
Indeed we'll have plenty of time to get caught up. And I intend to savor every minute. ::He kissed her again::
::When the kiss finished, he bit his lip a little, then stroked her cheek.::
My love, before we have to get back, I....I need to tell you something. I know this may not be the best time to bring this up, but it's something that's been eating at me a long time.
And beofre you think anyhting, this is not your fault.

What? What is it, Brock?
::The way he began, it sounded like it was very bad news. She wasn't sure if she wanted to hear it or not. And without realizing it, as she had been worrying more and more about what he might tell her, she'd been pulling back from him more and more.::
